LISBON:
MIRADOURO PORTAS DO SOL AND MIRADOURO SANTA LUZIA
Located in the Alfama district, the Portas do Sol viewpoint is one of the most famous spots in all of Portugal and a perfect place to surprise your girlfriend/boyfriend with photos of your proposal.
The viewpoint is very well located, allowing us to see an incredible view of captivating Lisbon.

In the background, we will photograph iconic Portuguese buildings such as the National Pantheon, the Church of São Vicente de Fora, as well as the Manueline architecture that is typical of Lisbon, and the Tagus River in the distance covering the panorama.

For example, within a one-minute walk we can take photos at the Santa Luzia viewpoint, which is full of typical Lisbon tiles and decorated with beautiful bougainvillea trees.
We can also explore Alfama’s narrow streets, Lisbon Cathedral, and the iconic yellow Tram 28. A quick stop at a traditional café can add a relaxed, authentic touch to the session.
Together, these locations create a beautiful visual story of your proposal in Lisbon. Best time for a surprise proposal: Early morning, ideally before 10 am. The viewpoints can become busy later in the day, making it harder to keep the proposal private.
TORRE DE BELÉM
The Belém Tower is a 16th-century construction that blends contemporary Lisbon features with its architecture.
Clients typically love the Belém Tower option, because, in addition to the beautiful light at dusk, it offers panoramic views of the Tagus River and the 25th of April Bridge, and there's a perfect garden for taking photos in front of the tower, making the pictures even more incredible.

For couples who book a session of 1.5 hours or more, we can explore more locations around Belém.
These may include the Vasco da Gama Garden, the Monument to the Discoveries, and other scenic areas along the waterfront. Belém Tower is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon, when the light can create a warm atmosphere for your photographs.
If you don’t mind having some people around, Belém can be a wonderful place to propose and enjoy a romantic photoshoot in Lisbon.
PARQUE BOTÂNICO DA AJUDA
Parque Botânico da Ajuda is a hidden gem in Lisbon that few visitors know about or visit.
Perfect for marriage proposals, the garden is a secluded and romantic spot, featuring low-lying shrubs that enhance photos, as well as views of the 25th of April Bridge and the famous Cristo Rei statue, and even peacocks!

One important detail is the photography fee. The garden administration may charge a fee for professional photo sessions, depending on the duration and requirements of the booking.
It's worth considering whether it's worth having a photoshoot in such a wonderful place as Parque Botânico da Ajuda.
AZENHAS DO MAR

Azenhas do Mar is one of those places that looks more like the 5-star spa you've always dreamed of... In reality, it's a very pleasant location to photograph your marriage proposal in Sintra and enjoy the rest of the day with the love of your life.
We often recommend starting the photoshoot at the viewpoint before exploring the surrounding staircases and coastal scenery. This allows us to create a variety of images while keeping the experience relaxed.
Azenhas do Mar is especially suitable for couples who feel shy in front of the camera and want candid photos. The quieter atmosphere makes it easier to enjoy the moment naturally, without feeling surrounded by crowds.

For a proposal photoshoot near Lisbon, Azenhas do Mar offers a beautiful combination of Portuguese architecture, ocean views, and privacy.
CABO DA ROCA / PRAIA DA URSA
I decided to put these two places in a single post because they are very close to each other and I can usually do a photoshoot in both.

Cabo da Roca is famous for its dramatic cliffs, natural vegetation, and expansive Atlantic Ocean views. It is also known as the westernmost point of mainland Europe, making it a meaningful destination for couples visiting Portugal.
The scenery is particularly beautiful around sunset, when the changing light creates a dramatic atmosphere for proposal photography.
Nearby, Ursa Beach offers another impressive coastal viewpoint, with imposing cliffs and rugged natural landscapes. However, the descent towards the beach can be challenging and potentially dangerous. I don't like to go down to the beach with clients; I prefer to stay at the viewpoint.

For this reason, we generally recommend photographing the proposal from safer viewpoints rather than descending to the sand.
If you would prefer a beach photoshoot with easier access, Azenhas do Mar or Praia do Magoito may be better alternatives.
Cabo da Roca and Praia da Ursa are ideal for couples who love dramatic landscapes and want their proposal photos to feel connected to Portugal’s natural beauty.
PRIVATE BOAT TOUR ON THE TAGUS RIVER
For couples looking for a unique and intimate proposal experience, a private boat tour on the Tagus River can be an unforgettable way to celebrate.

Imagine having a special place just for the two of you with wines, sparkling wines, grapes, and delicious snacks while you explore Lisbon? — with the possibility of varying the menu with vegetarian or vegan options!
A boat proposal allows you to enjoy the city from a different perspective. We can photograph the moment of the proposal, the river views, and the relaxed celebration that follows.
At The Portugal Photo Shoot, we recommend exploring options with experienced boat tour providers, such as Oceanscape, to help create a smooth and memorable experience.
QUINTA DA REGALEIRA
Many clients dream of having their photos taken in palaces, and some of the buildings are truly breathtaking. One of the most famous palaces in Portugal is Quinta da Regaleira.
Quinta da Regaleira boasts a beautiful, well-lit environment, a diverse garden of plants and trees, as well as stunning Neo-Gothic and Neo-Manueline architecture.

The estate offers a variety of visual settings, from elegant architectural details to peaceful garden paths. This makes it possible to create a proposal photoshoot with different backgrounds and moods.
Other notable palaces in Sintra, such as Pena Palace and Monserrate Palace, will be detailed further by our team at The Portugal Photo Shoot in another post on our website.
For couples who want a palace setting with beautiful gardens and distinctive architecture, Quinta da Regaleira is an excellent location to consider.
ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROPOSE IN SINTRA?
Let us help you plan a beautiful and discreet surprise proposal in Sintra and capture every special moment naturally.
PORTO:
Heading north, we find a different landscape. With special cities boasting captivating architectural landmarks and natural views, Porto stands out from Lisbon and can even be considered more romantic!
Below, I'll suggest some special places to surprise your partner in Porto.
BANKS OF DOURO RIVER
The banks of the Douro River are the heart of the city of Porto. Just as hearts in the human body need veins to carry blood, the Douro River carries its water and beauty through Portugal, with a view that is simply breathtaking.

It is one of the most scenic places for a marriage proposal in Porto. We can photograph the proposal beside the river, capture the bridge in the background, and explore the surrounding streets for a variety of images.
The riverfront also offers restaurants, cafés, and traditional Portuguese scenery. A short coffee break can become a natural part of the photoshoot, adding a relaxed and authentic touch to your photographs.
Depending on the chosen location and time of day, we can walk along the waterfront and discover small details that help tell the story of your proposal.
The screenings at Rio do Ouro are a 10 out of 10, with brilliant framing and beautiful light that descends towards the river; it's impossible not to recommend this place!
RIBEIRA
Near the Douro River lies one of Porto's oldest, most emblematic, and picturesque neighborhoods. Known as Ribeira, couple photos will become unforgettable here.
It's easy to recognize the Ribeira photo when you see it, and I love taking my clients' photos here.

Because it's an internationally renowned area, Ribeira fills up with visitors quickly in the mornings.
So, if you want to photograph your surprise proposal in this neighborhood, we suggest doing it between 7:30 am and 10 am. This is also a perfect time for those who want to enjoy the day exploring the city after photographing one of the most important moments of their lives!
JARDIM PALÁCIOS DE CRISTAL
If you're looking for a less crowded location that still captures the essence of Porto, I recommend the lovely Crystal Palace Garden.

Garden proposals can be unforgettable and a great place for you to relax and get those candid photos you truly desire.
In this garden, we can create various photo styles for the couple. We can capture everything from the most intimate moment of the proposal to photos of you walking through the gardens, chatting, and enjoying the moment together. In addition to the greenery and tree-lined paths, the location offers different viewpoints with beautiful views of the Douro River and the city of Porto. This allows us to vary the scenery considerably without having to travel long distances.

For couples who aren't used to being photographed, this can make all the difference. The session becomes less about "posing for photos" and more about experiencing and documenting the marriage proposal.
Therefore, the Crystal Palace Garden is an excellent option for those seeking a marriage proposal in Porto with a romantic, tranquil atmosphere and that authentic touch that makes the photographs look like a true souvenir of the trip.
JARDIM DO MORRO
Speaking of gardens, I'd like to mention the not-so-obvious, but my favorite spot in the city: Jardim do Morro.

Located across the bridge, Jardim do Morro is in Vila Nova de Gaia. It's an area facing the Douro River, with narrow streets steeped in history and numerous attractions that will enhance your photos.
Jardim do Morro can be a peaceful option for photographing your marriage proposal in the mornings.
At sunset, many tourists gather to appreciate the spectacle of colors in the sky. This leads me to suggest to couples that photo sessions in the garden always take place in the morning.
PÉRGOLA DA FOZ
Do you want to propose in Porto, near the beach and close to the historic center?
Pérgula da Foz is a great option!

Located in Foz do Douro, Pérgula da Foz is an iconic spot in the city and can provide you with candid photos with a slightly different look to surprise you.
The best part is that our photo session doesn't have to be in just one location. We can walk towards the sand and the sea and take photos with a beautiful aesthetic. For couples who prefer a romantic, elegant, and relaxed atmosphere, the Pérgola da Foz is a beautiful choice for a marriage proposal in Porto.

It also offers a completely different experience from Ribeira. Instead of historic buildings and busy streets, you get the Atlantic Ocean, open landscapes, and a quieter atmosphere that allows you to enjoy this special moment together.
PRAIA DO MIRAMAR OR CAPELA DO SENHOR DA PEDRA
Miramar Beach, also known as the Chapel of Senhor da Pedra, is one of the best places to photograph your marriage proposal in Porto.
The sunlight on the beach is always beautiful, making for great photo sessions.

In addition, the chapel has objects that provide excellent backdrops for photos: the typical blue tiles of Portugal, staircases, grand stones, and the chapel itself, which can give a more religious tone to your ceremony.
Throughout the year, the beach has a low flow of visitors, making it a great option for those looking for more secluded places to celebrate with their partner.

AVEIRO — THE PORTUGUESE VENICE
Make Your Dream Come True
Known as the “Portuguese Venice,” Aveiro is a charming city filled with colorful moliceiro boats, traditional architecture, canals, and beautiful Art Nouveau buildings.
It is a wonderful destination for a surprise proposal in Portugal, especially for couples looking for something different from the more famous locations in Lisbon and Porto.
The canals and bridges create beautiful backgrounds for a proposal photoshoot, while the colorful boats add a unique Portuguese character to the photographs.
Aveiro is also a great place for candid photography. We can walk through the city, explore the canals, stop for a coffee, and capture natural moments between you without making the session feel overly posed.
For couples, this creates a beautiful lifestyle photoshoot that documents not only the proposal, but also the experience of discovering Aveiro together.
And your photography experience does not have to end with a marriage proposal.
Aveiro can also be a wonderful setting for a couple photoshoot, family photography, engagement sessions, honeymoon portraits, and relaxed lifestyle photographs during your trip to Portugal.
Its elegant streets and colorful scenery can also work beautifully for wedding photography, elopements, engagement celebrations, and intimate destination weddings.
Whether you are planning a surprise proposal, traveling with your family, celebrating your honeymoon, or simply want professional photographs to remember your trip, Aveiro offers many possibilities for a personalized photoshoot.
